7th Working Group on Sediment Generation

The IAS is sponsoring the 7th Working Group on Sediment Generation. Student Travel Grants are available, closing date 15 June 2026
The Working Group on Sediment Generation (WGSG) is a network of geoscientists devoted to research on siliciclastic sediment generation, routing systems, depositional environments, and diagenetic processes.
The 7th WGSG meeting will be held at the University of Coimbra (Coimbra, Portugal) on 10-12 September 2026. The meeting will be preceded by a 3-day Sediment Generation Course (7th-9th of September 2026) and followed by a 2-day field trip to southern Portugal to visit places where environmental changes and extreme events can be identified in the Quaternary stratigraphic record. It will serve to promote integrated research on sediment generation, dispersal patterns and accumulation, both in recent and “deep” time.
Young researchers will also benefit from a 3-day course focused on the most important methodologies used today in the investigation of sediment generation, including bulk geochemistry and mineralogy, petrography, varietal studies, detrital geochronology and thermochronology, image analysis and machine learning, and compositional data analysis. During the course, these methodologies will be taught in seminars and practical lessons by recognised experts. As has happened in previous WGSG meetings, world-relevant case studies, based on the investigation of clastic sedimentary units from different regions and geological times, will be presented and discussed at the main event of the 7th WGSG.
IAS Student Travel grants are available. The closing date is 15th June 2026. Please see the guidelines here and apply via your IAS member dashboard.
